This award was given in recognition of Marine Current Turbines installing the world’s first commercial scale tidal current system, the 1.2MW SeaGen turbine, in Northern Ireland’s Strangford Lough last year and of having achieved full power with it on a regular basis. The citation recognised MCT's pioneering work having installed Seaflow, the world's first full size offshore marine-renewable power system back in 2003 and mentioned Marine Current Turbine Ltd's plans for a 10.5MW tidal far off Anglesey in partnership with RWE Npower Renewables.
The company’s Technical Director and co-founder, Peter Fraenkel, received the award on February 24th from Dr Steven Fawkes of Matrix Corporate Capital at London’s Natural History Museum. The New Energy Awards are sponsored annually by City law firm Rosenblatt and presented by Business XL magazine. The key criterion that enabled Marine Current Turbines to win the New Energy Rising Star is said to be for “creating a buzz in the market, through its innovative technology or its potential.”
