About Marine Current Turbines

Company History

Marine Current Turbines Ltd, established in 1999, is both first mover and world leader in marine current and tidal stream energy to electricity conversion. MCT’s technological origins date back to the 1970s, since the company’s inception it has pioneered tidal stream marine energy and is  considered to be the global leader in the industry.

MCT installed the 300kW Seaflow system, the world’s first offshore tidal turbine near Lynmouth in Devon in 2003. In 2008,  the installation and commissioning of the world’s first commercial scale tidal turbine was completed, the 1.2 MW SeaGen located in Strangford Narrows in Northern Ireland. SeaGen is uniquely and demonstrably capable of meeting the technological and environmental challenge of operating in an offshore underwater environment whilst reliably and predictably generating low carbon energy. Many features of the design have been patented internationally.

In 2010 Siemens became a shareholder in MCT, providing a significant vote of confidence for the technology and the development work being carried out. Siemens made the decision in 2012 to acquire all of the shares of MCT with the intention of becoming the leading OEM in the emerging tidal energy market.
